Git Delete Local Branch
To delete a local branch in Git, you can run the command "git branch -d [branch_name]" in your terminal. This command will delete the specified branch from your local repository.
Here is an example of how you can delete a local branch in Git:
1. First, confirm which local branches are available by running the command "git branch" in your terminal. This will display a list of all local branches.
2. Identify the branch that you want to delete from the list of branches displayed.
3. Run the command "git branch -d [branch_name]", replacing [branch_name] with the name of the branch you want to delete. For example, if you want to delete a branch named "feature-branch", the command would be "git branch -d feature-branch".
4. If the branch you are trying to delete has unmerged changes, Git will not allow you to delete it. In that case, you can either merge the changes into another branch or use the command "git branch -D [branch_name]" to force delete the branch. Be cautious with this option, as it deletes the branch and all its unmerged changes permanently.
Here is an example of how you can delete a local branch named "feature-branch":
$ git branch
* main
develop
feature-branch
$ git branch -d feature-branch
Deleted branch feature-branch (was 1234567).
$ git branch
* main
develop
In the example above, "git branch" command is used to display all local branches. Then, the "git branch -d feature-branch" command is used to delete the "feature-branch" from the local repository. Finally, by running "git branch" again, you can see that the branch has been successfully deleted.
